Terms of Service

Last updated 12 September 2026

These are the conditions for using Purser while it is under active development. They are deliberately written in plain English. The parts that matter most are sections 2, 4 and 9.

01Who these terms are between

These terms are an agreement between you, the person installing and using the Purser app or website, and J/P Willy Company, registered in Sweden ("we", "us"). By installing the app downloaded from purser-app.com, or by using the website, you accept them. If you are using Purser on behalf of a company, a charter operation or a co-ownership, you confirm you have the authority to accept these terms for that organisation.

If you do not agree with something in this document, please do not install the app, and write to us at hello@purser.app so we know what put you off.

02What Purser is and is not

Purser is a record-keeping tool. It stores information you enter about a vessel's equipment, serial numbers, part numbers, service history, spare parts and documents, and lets you search and export that information. That is the whole scope of the product.

Purser is not a navigation instrument, not a safety system, not a survey, and not a substitute for any of them. It does not monitor your engine, read your instruments, track your position or warn you of danger. A service reminder in Purser is a note you wrote to yourself, computed from figures you typed in; it is not a measurement of the condition of your equipment.

Nothing in the app or on the website is professional advice about maintenance, seaworthiness, insurance or the sale of a vessel. Manufacturer service intervals shown in the app are supplied by you or are general defaults, and may not match your engine, your usage or your manufacturer's current guidance.

03Active development; provided as is; features may change

Purser is under active development and will change — sometimes substantially — between versions. Screens, fields, the structure of records and export formats may all be altered as we learn from the people using it.

The software is provided as is and as available. It may contain bugs, may crash, and may occasionally require you to update before continuing. Uninterrupted availability is not guaranteed. We will do our best to migrate your records safely across versions and we will tell you before any change that could affect your data, but you should export your records regularly, exactly as you would back up any important file.

We may add, alter or withdraw features, pause the service, or end it, at our discretion. If we end the project altogether we will give at least 90 days' notice by email and in the app, during which export will continue to work.

04Your responsibility for your vessel, your maintenance decisions and your safety

You are the skipper or owner, and you remain responsible for your vessel, for the people aboard it, and for every maintenance and operational decision you make. Purser holds the information you give it; it cannot verify that a serial number is right, that a part was actually fitted, or that a job was done properly.

Do not rely on Purser as the sole record for any safety-critical decision. Before relying on a record — the service date of a liferaft, the last inspection of standing rigging, the expiry of a gas hose, the hours since a belt was changed — check the physical item, the manufacturer's documentation or a qualified surveyor. Reminders can be missed, dates can be typed wrongly, and phones can fail. Keep independent records for anything that matters to safety or to your insurance.

Where Purser is used in connection with the sale or survey of a vessel, the exported record is a summary of what you entered. It is your responsibility, not ours, to ensure its accuracy and completeness before giving it to a buyer, broker, surveyor or insurer.

05Your records are your property; your licence to use the software

Everything you enter into Purser — text, figures, photographs, documents and the structure you give them — belongs to you. We claim no ownership of it and no right to use it beyond what is needed to provide features you switch on, as described in the Privacy Policy.

In return we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use the Purser app on Android devices you own or control, for the purpose of keeping records of vessels you own, manage or crew on. The software itself, its design, its code and the Purser name and sail mark remain ours. You may not copy, modify, reverse engineer, resell or redistribute the app except where the law expressly allows it.

If you send us feedback, bug reports or suggestions, we may use them to improve the product without owing you anything, and you will not be identified as the source unless you ask to be.

06Acceptable use

Use Purser for keeping records of vessels. Do not use it to store material that is unlawful, that infringes someone else's rights, or that you do not have permission to hold. Do not attempt to gain access to other users' records, to disrupt our servers, to bypass usage limits, or to use the online features to send unsolicited email.

If you share a vessel with a co-owner or crew, you are responsible for what you share and for having the right to share it. We may suspend online features for accounts that breach this section, after contacting you where practicable.

07Accounts and optional online features

The app works without an account. Cloud backup, sharing with a co-owner or crew, and emailed reports are optional and require an email address so that we can send you links and messages. You are responsible for keeping that email account secure, because anyone who controls it can request a recovery link for your backup.

Online features depend on our servers and on third-party providers and may be unavailable from time to time. They are offered as a convenience and are not guaranteed. Turning an online feature off does not affect the records on your phone.

08Export and termination

You may export your complete records at any time from within the app: the full log as CSV, the service history as PDF, and photographs as ordinary image files. This function is available regardless of whether you use online features, and we commit to keeping it available for as long as the app exists and for the notice period if the app is withdrawn.

You may stop using Purser at any time by uninstalling the app and, if you used online features, by asking us to delete your account data. We may terminate your access to online features if you materially breach these terms and do not remedy the breach within 14 days of being told about it. Termination does not remove the records held on your phone, which remain yours.

09Limitation of liability and disclaimer of warranties

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Purser is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that records will never be lost.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, loss of profit, cost of repairs, cost of replacement parts, delay, grounding, damage to a vessel, injury, or any loss arising from a maintenance or operational decision made in reliance on information in the app. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you for all claims arising from the use of Purser is limited to the greater of one hundred euros or the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. If you are a consumer, you retain all rights given to you by the mandatory law of the country where you live.

10Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by Swedish law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer in the EU, you retain the mandatory rights and consumer protections of the country where you live, and you may bring proceedings in its courts.

If a dispute arises, write to hello@purser.app first. Most problems with a small product are fixed faster by email than by lawyers. If we cannot resolve it within 60 days, either of us may take the matter to the competent courts described above. The European Commission's online dispute resolution platform is also available to consumers.

11Changes to these terms

We may revise these terms as the product evolves, gains paid features or expands to iOS. The date at the top reflects the current version. For material changes we will notify you in the app or by email at least 30 days before they take effect. Continuing to use Purser after that date means you accept the revised terms; if you do not, export your records and stop using the app before then, and no further obligations arise.

12Contact

Questions about these terms, notices, and complaints should be sent to hello@purser.app. We read everything and answer in plain language.
